WhatsApp Business Charges in Kenya From 1 October: What Changes and Who Pays
From 1 October 2026, WhatsApp Business Platform replies are charged after 1,000 free per number each month. Who is affected, what it costs and what to do.
Since 1 October 2026, Kenyan businesses that answer customers through the WhatsApp Business Platform pay Meta for replies once they pass a free allowance. Until now, replies sent inside the 24-hour window after a customer writes in were free.
The change was confirmed by WhatsApp Business partners such as respond.io and reported in Kenya by Tech-ish and Kenyans.co.ke.
What changed on 1 October
Three things, according to respond.io’s summary of Meta’s update:
- Service messages are now charged after a free tier. Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month. From the 1,001st, each reply is charged at the rate for the customer’s country.
- Unused free messages do not roll over. The allowance resets every month.
- Utility template messages are charged per message. These are the pre-approved templates businesses send for things like order confirmations and delivery updates.
For Kenya, Tech-ish reports a rate of about KSh 0.52 per service message, while some other outlets quote a slightly different figure. Kenya falls in Meta’s “Rest of Africa” pricing region, so check Meta’s current rate card through your WhatsApp provider before you budget.
Who is affected, and who is not
| You use… | Affected? | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The free WhatsApp Business app, replying by hand | No | Nothing changes for you |
| The WhatsApp Business Platform (API) through a provider | Yes | Replies beyond 1,000 a month per number are charged |
| A chatbot or helpdesk connected to WhatsApp | Yes, it runs on the Platform | Every automated reply counts towards the 1,000 |
| Order and payment confirmation templates | Yes | Each template message is charged |
The businesses that feel this most are those answering thousands of customers a month: banks, SACCOs, insurers, online shops, delivery firms, clinics and schools with busy WhatsApp lines.
What this costs: a worked example
Worked example: a Mombasa online shop answers about 60 customer chats a day through a WhatsApp chatbot, with one reply per chat.
- Replies a month: 60 x 30 = 1,800
- Free allowance: 1,000
- Charged replies: 1,800 - 1,000 = 800
- At the reported KSh 0.52 each: 800 x 0.52 = KSh 416 a month
That is small for a busy shop. The cost grows with every extra reply, though: a chatbot that sends three short messages where one would do triples the charged replies.
What changes for Kenyan firms
For most SMEs on the free WhatsApp Business app, nothing changes. For businesses running automated WhatsApp customer service, three practical steps:
- Count your monthly replies per number in your provider’s dashboard, so you know whether you pass 1,000.
- Make each reply count. Combine short bot messages into one complete answer, and let customers choose from a menu instead of back-and-forth questions.
- Review your templates. Send order and payment confirmations only where they help the customer, since each one is now charged.

Businesses that answer customers through the WhatsApp Business Platform or a chatbot now pay for replies beyond 1,000 a month per number. Shops using the free WhatsApp Business app are not affected.
