The best AI courses in Kenya in 2026 fall into three groups: free online introductions (Elements of AI, Anthropic’s AI Fluency course, fast.ai), paid online certificates you can take from anywhere (Google AI Essentials, ALX AI Career Essentials, Microsoft’s AI-901 exam), and Kenyan programmes with live classes (Moringa School, Strathmore’s iLabAfrica, Zindua School, eMobilis and the Open University of Kenya). Pick by goal: using AI at work needs a short practical course, while building AI systems needs a long programme with Python and a real project.
Below is every option we could check on the provider’s own page in October 2026, what it actually teaches, who it suits, and the fee where the provider publishes one.
Key Takeaways
- Decide first whether you want to use AI tools or build AI systems. The two paths share almost nothing after week one.
- Start with a free course before paying for anything. If you do not finish a free four-hour course, a KSh 200,000 bootcamp will not fix that.
- Read the prerequisites line before the fee line. Several “beginner” courses quietly expect Python.
- Divide the fee by the live teaching hours. It is the fastest way to compare a two-week workshop with a seven-month bootcamp.
- Finish every course with one piece of work from your own job, done with AI. That is what employers and clients ask to see.
Which AI courses can you take in Kenya right now?
Here is the full list, grouped by cost and format. Fees are as shown on each provider’s page at the time of writing (15 October 2026). Where a provider does not publish a fee, we say so rather than guess.
| Course | Provider | Format | Fee shown | What this means for you |

What are the best free AI courses for Kenyans?
Free courses are where almost everyone should start. You lose nothing but time if the subject turns out not to suit you.
Elements of AI. Run by MinnaLearn and the University of Helsinki, it is a free online course “for everyone interested in learning what AI is”. Part 1, Introduction to AI, needs no complicated maths or programming. Part 2, Building AI, covers the algorithms and recommends basic Python.
Anthropic Academy. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, describes its academy as free courses, tutorials and use cases. The core non-technical course is AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations, listed at 14 lessons and about 4 hours. The course catalogue also includes versions for small businesses, educators, students and nonprofits, and it issues completion certificates.
fast.ai. Practical Deep Learning for Coders is free, but the page is clear that you need about a year of coding experience, preferably in Python. Part 1 is 9 lessons of roughly 90 minutes each. This is excellent for a developer and the wrong place for a beginner.
Our view: do Elements of AI Part 1 or AI Fluency this week. Either tells you quickly whether you enjoy the subject.
Which online AI certificates are worth paying for?
A certificate is only worth paying for when it comes from a name your employer or client recognises, and when the course makes you do real tasks.
Google AI Essentials on Coursera is beginner level with “zero experience required”, and takes under 10 hours across five short courses. Coursera lists $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day trial, with prices varying elsewhere, and financial aid is available. Google also lists a newer Google AI Professional Certificate of eight courses, about 8 hours in total, which includes a three-month Google AI Pro trial (aid recipients do not get the trial).
AI For Everyone by DeepLearning.AI, taught by Andrew Ng, is about 7 hours across four modules on Coursera. It suits business leaders who need to understand what AI can and cannot do. The materials and certificate sit behind the paid certificate option.
ALX AI and Career Essentials is an 8-week, self-paced programme at about 20 hours a week, with no coding required. Its six courses run from AI foundations and prompting to ethics, content creation, data analysis and an AI-powered portfolio. The programme page does not show a fee, so check sponsorship and cost when you apply.
Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals is now assessed through exam AI-901, updated on 15 April 2026. Microsoft now expects candidates to know Python syntax and Azure resources, and the exam price depends on the country where you sit it. If you heard this was the easy no-code badge, that advice is out of date.
Which AI courses in Nairobi have live classes?
Live classes cost more, but the teacher and schedule are often what gets people to finish.
Moringa School lists several AI courses. The shortest is Generative AI Essentials: two weeks, four live online sessions of 2.5 hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6:00 pm to 8:30 pm EAT), KSh 25,000, with the next intake starting 26 October 2026. It needs only basic computer literacy, sessions are recorded for people with unstable connections, and the full course can be done on free tiers of the AI tools.
At the other end is Moringa’s Data Science Bootcamp, which covers Python, machine learning, neural networks, an LLM module and MLOps. It runs 31 weeks full-time or 50 weeks part-time from 2 November 2026, at KSh 200,000 (full-time hybrid), KSh 174,000 (full-time remote) or KSh 200,000 (part-time remote). You pass a technical assessment first, and the laptop spec is demanding: an Intel i5 11th Gen or Ryzen 5 4000 series, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD.
Strathmore University’s iLabAfrica runs an AI Professional Programme online in the evenings, with 12 core weeks plus four optional specialisation weeks in finance, health, education or SMEs. The current cohort runs 3 August to 23 October 2026 and the page does not show a fee. Its AWS AI Practitioner Programme costs KSh 85,000 for 20 hours in person and 10 hours virtual, needs a minimum KCSE certificate, and prepares you for the AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam.
Zindua School in Westlands lists Applied AI Engineering (4 to 8 months part-time), 30-day weekend short courses called Build with AI and AI Workflow Automation, and a one-day in-person masterclass. Fees are not shown on the page, but it offers Lipa Mdogo Mdogo financing.
eMobilis in Westlands runs a three-month Data Science and Machine Learning course with Saturday classes and intakes in January, May and July. Its listed prerequisites include programming in R or Python and a good grasp of statistics.
AI Consultancy Kenya also trains individuals and teams, online or on-site, with no technical background needed. Our sessions are built around the tools and tasks each learner already has. If you are training a whole department, our guide to corporate AI training in Kenya compares formats.
Is there a university degree in AI in Kenya?
Yes. The Open University of Kenya offers a two-year, online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. The fee shown is KSh 187,500 in total (KSh 101,500 in year one and KSh 86,000 in year two), and applications were shown as open when we checked.
Entry needs a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or a bachelor’s plus a relevant postgraduate diploma. A master’s is the right choice if you want research, teaching or senior technical roles. It is the wrong choice if you simply want to write better reports with ChatGPT next month.
How do you choose the right AI course for your goal?
Match the course to the job you want it to do. This table is the short version.
| Your goal | Start with | Then move to | What this means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use AI tools in an office job | AI Fluency or Elements of AI Part 1 | Moringa Generative AI Essentials or Google AI Essentials | Under KSh 30,000 and a few weeks gets you there |
| Lead a team that is adopting AI | AI For Everyone | A team session built on your own workflows | Understanding beats coding at this level |
| Automate tasks without coding | AI Fluency | Moringa or Zindua workflow automation courses | You will learn tools like n8n, not Python |
| Become a data scientist or AI engineer | Elements of AI Part 2, then fast.ai | Moringa, Zindua or eMobilis long programmes | Budget months, a strong laptop and maths |
| Get a recognised degree | Free courses to test interest | OUK MSc Artificial Intelligence | Two years, and you need a relevant first degree |
If maths or coding worries you, read our breakdown of AI course requirements in Kenya before you apply anywhere.
Worked example: comparing cost per teaching hour
Worked example: an accounts assistant in Nakuru has KSh 30,000 saved and wants to compare three options by what she pays for each hour of scheduled teaching. These are planning figures using the schedules on each provider’s page.
- Moringa Generative AI Essentials: 4 sessions × 2.5 hours = 10 hours, plus 1 hour of onboarding = 11 hours. KSh 25,000 ÷ 11 = about KSh 2,270 per hour.
- Strathmore AWS AI Practitioner: 20 hours in person + 10 hours virtual = 30 hours. KSh 85,000 ÷ 30 = about KSh 2,830 per hour.
- Moringa Data Science, part-time remote: 50 weeks × 3 evenings × 3 hours = 450 hours. KSh 200,000 ÷ 450 = about KSh 440 per hour.
The bootcamp is the cheapest per hour and the most expensive overall. For her goal (faster reconciliations and better client emails), the two-week course is the right buy, and it leaves KSh 5,000 (30,000 - 25,000) for data bundles and a month of a paid AI tool if she wants one. Hourly cost tells you value, not fit. Our article on what an AI course really costs covers the hidden costs in more detail.
How do you get started with an AI course this week?
- Write down one task. Pick a real piece of work you do every week, such as a monthly report, customer replies or a stock sheet. This becomes your test case for every course.
- Take one free course. Finish Elements of AI Part 1 or AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations by Sunday. If you stall, you have learned something useful for free.
- Apply it to your task. Use a free AI tool on that task and note what worked and what went wrong. Our prompt engineering guide helps here.
- Read the prerequisites of your shortlist. Check for Python, statistics, a degree or a laptop spec. Cross off anything you cannot meet yet.
- Ask the provider three questions. What is the total fee including exams? What will I build? When does the next cohort start? Get the answers in writing.
- Book protected time. Put the class hours and the same again for practice in your calendar before you pay.
What mistakes should you avoid when choosing an AI course?
- Paying before testing your interest. Free courses exist so you can find out cheaply.
- Trusting the word “beginner”. Microsoft’s AI-901 and fast.ai both expect code. Read the prerequisites.
- Choosing a bootcamp for a productivity goal. Seven months of machine learning is the wrong tool for writing faster emails.
- Ignoring cohort dates. Strathmore’s current AI Professional Programme ends on 23 October 2026, so a late applicant waits for the next intake.
- Collecting certificates without work to show. A finished piece of your own work, done with AI, says more than five badges.
- Never checking AI output. Running our own publishing desk taught us that an AI writer will invent statistics and client stories unless checks stop it (our case study). Any good course should teach you to verify, not just to prompt.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI course is best for a complete beginner in Kenya?
Start with a free course: Elements of AI Part 1 or Anthropic’s AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations. Neither needs maths or coding. If you then want a live class, Moringa’s two-week Generative AI Essentials needs only basic computer literacy. See our guide to learning AI online without a technical background.
How much does an AI course cost in Kenya?
From nothing to a few hundred thousand shillings. Elements of AI, AI Fluency and fast.ai are free, Moringa’s Generative AI Essentials is KSh 25,000, Strathmore’s AWS AI Practitioner is KSh 85,000, and Moringa’s Data Science Bootcamp is KSh 174,000 to 200,000. Several providers do not publish fees, so ask before applying.
Can I learn AI online from Kenya with a certificate?
Yes. Google AI Essentials and AI For Everyone on Coursera issue shareable certificates, Anthropic’s catalogue issues completion certificates, and the Open University of Kenya runs a fully online MSc. On Coursera, check the financial aid option before paying.
Do I need to know coding to take an AI course?
Not for courses about using AI tools, such as AI Fluency, Google AI Essentials, ALX AI and Career Essentials or Moringa’s Generative AI Essentials. You do need it for building AI: fast.ai asks for about a year of coding, and Microsoft’s AI-901 expects Python. Most long bootcamps teach Python early but move fast.
Will an AI course get me a job in Kenya?
A course alone rarely does. Employers look for proof that you can do the work, so finish with a project from a real task. Our article on AI jobs in Kenya covers the skills employers ask for.
The bottom line
There are good AI courses in Kenya at every budget, including several free ones. Start free, decide whether you want to use AI or build it, check the prerequisites and the next intake date, and end every course with a piece of real work.
